Resilient Beaver Island
The 2023 Master Plan Update engages the planning commissions, community members, including visitors, of Peaine Township and St. James Township of Beaver Island to update the 2017 Joint Master Plan. The project also includes a Coastal Zone Management Community Resiliency Assessment and Coastal Zone Management Master Plan chapter component from NOAA and EGLE grant program.
LIAA is facilitating public engagement of this process through:
- Joint Township Planning Commission meetings
- Beaver Island Open House held on August 17, 2022 at the Community Center
- Online Public Input Survey
Much like a blueprint, a master plan serves as the public’s guide for the development of a community and the management of its resources. “Resilience” is a measure of the sustained ability of a community to utilize available resources to respond to, withstand, and/or recover from adverse situations. Communities that are resilient are able to learn from adversity and adopt quickly to change, both of which are hallmarks of successful communities today.
The Master Plan Update for Beaver Island's planning process is addressing a wide range of concerns such as natural resource preservation, efforts to build the local economy, and ways to manage the impacts of climate variability.
