Cheboygan County has the distinction of having more water surface than any other county in the State of Michigan. 77.3 square miles (9.69% of its area) are inland waters. The county has 344 inland lakes, 420 miles of streams, and 32 miles of Lake Huron shoreline.

Regulation meets the following Key Measures:

1

Prevents the removal and/or requires the installation of native vegetation near dunes and beaches.

The county requires native trees, shrubs and vegetation along the banks of the rivers, streams, and ponds within a defined lake and stream protection district. Maintenance of the natural vegetation strip is required to help stabilize the riverbanks, minimize erosion, provide shading which will help maintain cool water temperatures, help protect water quality by absorbing nutrients from surface water run-off, provide screening of manmade elements and protect fisheries and wildlife habitat.
Zoning Ordinance Article 10, Section 10.5

2

Minimizes the amount of impervious surface in the community.

Ordinance minimizes the location of impervious surfaces near waterways and provides some setbacks.
Zoning Ordinance Article 10, Section 10.4

4

Limits development/redevelopment along the shoreline.

Limits development within 200 feet of the Ordinary High Water Mark (with exceptions) in all municipalities and townships along the Lake Huron Shorefront. Additional setback requirements for various structures (primary, boat shelters, ect.) are provided for along the Cheboygan River, Indian River, the Lower Black River and other tributaries (as indicated on the County Zoning Map).
Zoning Ordinance Article 10, Section 10.1 – 10A.5
